Bardon Kindy in Brisbane is an ecoBiz partner focused on involving children and their families in sustainability. While the kindy has a strong history in adopting sustainable practices, the ecoBiz program has taken them to the next level. The kindy is a hub for 88 families in the community and plays a big role in promoting the importance of sustainability. Matthew explains, “We have a fairly significant position in the community. We have various influences which drive sustainability. Our staff are passionate as is the community and we are a reflection of the community.”
Becoming more sustainable was child’s play
The ecoBiz program helped the Bardon Kindy implement a range of low-cost measures to save money, increase efficiencies and create a more sustainable business. The results so far have been remarkable.
- Energy consumption reduced by 85%
- Water consumption reduced by 60.5%
- Waste consumption reduced by 87%
These energy reductions were a result of installing solar panels while the water savings came down to limiting toilet flushing. The children love being involved and have been given the responsibility of sorting their own waste into recycling, compost and landfill.
Simple and clear ecoBiz coaching advice is a winner
Matthew says a lot of their success has to do with the ecoBiz coaching. “The coach came to visit, walked around the site and observed certain practices. It was simple, clear and well-constructed advice broken down across water, waste and energy saving elements and we were also given a list of opportunities and advice.”
