Measuring the red tape burden on Queensland businesses

The biennial Efficient Regulation Report, which surveys hundreds of businesses across the state, reveals the cumulative financial, time and productivity burden of red tape across Queensland’s business community. 

Businesses have repeatedly told us that reducing red tape and regulatory burden is one of the leading issues they want governments to prioritise.

Business Chamber Queensland has been researching and mapping the regulatory burden on businesses since 2009 and working with all parts of government to reform red tape.

74% of Queensland businesses
indicated the overall cost of complying with regulation has increased since 2023
Almost half of Queensland businesses
reported spending more than 6 hours a week on compliance.
More than 8 in 10 Queensland businesses
said inefficient regulation inhibited their growth and productivity prospects.
1 in 3 Queensland businesses
employ staff for the specific purpose of managing compliance.

2025 Efficient Regulation Report

The 2025 Efficient Regulation Report reveals Queensland businesses are projected to spend more than $15 billion on regulatory compliance in 2025

It shows the median cost of compliance per business is now $30,000 and more than 80% of businesses said regulatory burden inhibited their growth and productivity prospects.
