The growing influence of geopolitics on energy markets, investment decisions and business confidence was the focus of discussion at our latest Business Matters event on 19 August, supported by Australian Retirement Trust.
Hosted by CEO Heidi Cooper, the panel brought together Brian Parker, Bob Gee, Meg Morgan and Adrian Panow to explore the challenges and opportunities facing businesses as global uncertainty continues to shape economic conditions.
Discussion centred on the increasing likelihood of energy supply disruptions and the need for businesses and governments to strengthen resilience through improved energy security, fuel storage and more diversified supply chains. Speakers noted that resilience starts locally, with Queensland well positioned to capitalise on emerging opportunities in renewable fuels and energy infrastructure.
The panel also highlighted the importance of strong relationships between business, government, trade partners and regional neighbours in supporting food security, energy security and long-term economic prosperity.
Queensland’s reputation as a stable and attractive investment destination was another key theme, with speakers pointing to the state’s strong regulatory environment, rule of law and proven track record in delivering major energy, resources and infrastructure projects. Australia’s position as both a trusted destination for investment and a source of global capital was identified as a competitive advantage in an increasingly uncertain world.
Looking ahead, workforce shortages and maintaining social licence were identified as some of the biggest challenges to future growth and energy security. Panellists agreed that building trust, engaging communities and providing credible leadership will be critical to securing support for future investments in energy, infrastructure, data centres and AI.
While the discussion acknowledged complex challenges on the horizon, the overall message was one of cautious optimism, with significant opportunities available for Queensland and Australian businesses prepared to adapt, innovate and lead.
