US tariffs: Queensland business impact updates

The US tariffs currently imposed on Australian businesses

There have been several tariff announcements in recent weeks which impact Queensland businesses exporting to the United States. Below is the latest information for different commodities. 

Commodity  Imposed tariff  Effective from 
Steel and aluminium  25%  12 March 2025 
Automobiles and automobile parts  25%  3 April 2025 
Reciprocal tariffs on all goods except: 

  • Articles already subject to 50 USC 1702 (Presidential authorities) 
  • Steel and aluminium 
  • Copper, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors and lumber 
  • All articles that may become subject to future *Section 232 tariffs 
  • Bullion 
  • Energy and other minerals that are not available in the US 
10%  5 April 2025 for all countries with the base rate tariff 

9 April 2025 for all countries with an individualised tariff 

On 9 April, President Trump announced a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs reducing the higher-rate tariffs to 10% for almost all countries except for Canada, Mexico and China.  

*Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 authorises the President to take action to adjust the imports of an article and its derivatives if the President concurs with the Secretary’s finding that the article is being imported into the US in such quantities or under such circumstances as to threaten to impair national security.
